Do you still hesitate to start a TikTok account? Or do you already have an account, but are you not sure which privacy settings are available? In this article, I’ll share 5 tips to make your TikTok account privacy proof.

For example, TikTok seems to take it more and more seriously and they have recently adjusted a number of privacy settings. A number of measures have been taken, especially for minors. However, I am curious what the consequences will be for the use of TikTok. There are a number of steps you can take to keep your TikTok account – and use – safe. In this article, I will discuss TikTok account privacy proof which privacy settings there are, how they work and what you can do if you think you have been hacked.

TikTok account privacy proof

1. Set your account to private

With a private account, only followers that you have approved yourself can see your videos. This means that people who don’t follow you will not be able to see your content. You can always turn this checkmark on and off. How do you make your account private?

  • Go to your own profile
  • Click on the three dots at the top right to go to your Settings
  • Choose Privacy
  • Set the slider at the top to green

Please note: with a private account, your profile information (photo, username, and biography) is visible to all users. Therefore, do not put personal information in your profile.

Below you will be given the option to recommend your account to others. If you set this slider to green, it means that your account will be visible as a recommendation to Facebook friends, contacts, or other users you may know. Don’t you want this? Then turn the slider off.

Specific options

Under the heading Security, you get a number of specific options:

Here you can indicate who can send you messages, do a duet with you and who can respond to you. If you chose a private account in the first step, these options are set by default so that only you or your friends (followers) can take these actions. Nor can anyone download your videos.

2. Manage your content preferences

So you decide who can see your content. You may still get comments that you don’t like or like. If you want to delete a comment, press and hold this comment and choose Delete.

If you come across videos on the For You Page that you don’t like, you can indicate your preferences. To do this, press and hold the video and select ‘not interested’.

You can then indicate whether you want to stop watching videos with that number or sound, or whether you want to hide the videos of that specific user. You will then see fewer of these types of videos in the future.

3. Block or unblock other users

With a public account, you can set who can send you messages, but with a private account, you can also approve or reject followers.

If you do not want a particular user to see your content and do not want them to be able to send you messages, you can permanently block this user. But if someone is intimidating you or engaging in offensive behavior, you can also report them.

How do you block someone on TikTok?

  • Go to the user’s profile page
  • Click on the three dots at the top-right
  • Click Block and follow the steps

Do you want to unblock someone? Then follow the same steps but choose Unblock.

At the bottom of Settings> Privacy, you can see which accounts you have blocked.

4. Secure your account

You can secure your TikTok account in a number of ways. As soon as you go to Settings, you will also see Security under Privacy.

At the top, you have the option to do a security check. Tiktok always notify about unusual activity in recent days

5. Set up two-step verification

As with many apps, it is now also possible to enable two-step verification with TikTok.

To keep your account safe, TikTok will ask for a verification code as soon as you log in using an unknown device or a third-party app. You can set how you want to receive the verification code:

  • SMS: a verification code will be sent via SMS when you log in
  • Email address: A verification will be sent to your email address when you log in

To set this up, go to Settings> Security> 2-step verification. You can also choose to save your login details. If you want to go for the safest option, I would turn this slider off so that you log in every time (with or without two-step verification).
