Gutenberg has been around for a while as a plugin, but since WordPress version, 5.0 Gutenberg has become part of WordPress. Gutenberg is the new WordPress editor that makes it easier, more intuitive to work with content in WordPress.

How Gutenberg works

In the old WordPress editor, you had one large page with content, with Gutenberg the page is divided into blocks. You can give each block properties. For example a text block or a block with a list (enumeration). You can also easily change the type. Change a text badly; for example in a quote.

You can use your own settings and layout for each block. And you can save blocks to use again later.

WordPress follows other website builders such as Wix and Weebly. And visual builders such as Visual Builder and Divi.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Gutenberg

As with anything, there are advantages and disadvantages to change. If you work with WordPress for a long time, you will have to get used to a new way of working. But the good news is, you get used to it quickly!

The benefits of Gutenberg

  • Creating and editing content has become more intuitive
  • The backend is more like the website frontend
  • You no longer need separate deposit codes
  • have more options to customize your content
  • You no longer have to use a separate visual builder

The Cons

  • It has become a bit more complex to learn, the old editor was simpler
  • Conflicts with existing WordPress themes and plugins that can cause a website to stop working

Back to the classic editor

Would you rather work with the classic WordPress editor? Which can! For this, you need to download and install the Classic Editor plugin. You can now choose whether you always use the classic editor or whether you want to switch between Gutenberg and the classic editor. You can indicate your preference under the heading Settings> Writing.

Gutenberg and visual builders

If you have a WordPress website with a visual builder like Divi or Visual Builder, you can still use it. It will be different for each builder how you can bypass Gutenberg. Consult the supplier’s website for this.
